PORTLAND, Ore (Reuters) - The dead bodies of a woman and four children were pulled from a burning house in southern Oregon on Monday and police said they had taken the woman's husband into custody.
At least some of the victims, who include 30-year-old Tabasha Criado, three boys aged 5, 6 and 7 and a 2-year-old girl, were found to have suffered stab wounds, Medford Police Lieutenant Bob Hansen said.
"There was evidence of stabbing and smoke inhalation. The true cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner," Hansen said.
He said Criado's husband, 51-year-old Jordan Criado, was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and taken into police custody, Hansen said.
Criado had not been charged with a crime.
"We would like to talk to him, but he is unable to talk at this time. He is unconscious," Hansen said.
The children have not been identified but are presumed to be the couple's.
Early on Monday morning, Jordan Criado called police and reported his wife missing, Hansen said. Police found Tabasha Criado and returned her home, he said.
The fire was reported about four hours later.
When asked if she had been fearful for her life, Hansen responded that "we had no indications" that was the case.
The police report of the earlier incident has not yet been written, Hansen said.
"This is a very, very sad situation," he said.
